About Dr Abbey Akinoshun

Let's Talk

Dr Abbey Akinoshun is a trailblazer in the field of advocacy and employment and regulatory law, with over 25 years of experience representing nurses, midwives, and other healthcare professionals in the United Kingdom. His journey to becoming an Employment and Regulatory Law Consultant and Independent Nurse Consultant is nothing short of extraordinary.

Starting his career in the UK as a cleaner, Dr Akinoshun took it upon himself to challenge workplace injustice when he won his first-ever representation case, defending both himself and his colleagues without any formal legal training. This victory ignited a passion for justice that has since driven him to fight tirelessly for the Black Community and later coned down to Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) nurses and midwives, many of whom face racial discrimination, harassment, and victimisation in the workplace.

Motivated by his personal experience of racial discrimination, Dr Akinoshun educated himself in employment and regulatory law and established the Voluntary Employment Advisory Services for Ethnic Minorities (VEASEM), a self-funded organisation offering free legal advice and representation. Over the years, he has successfully represented hundreds of professionals who lacked the financial means to hire lawyers, helping them navigate employment tribunals and disciplinary hearings with dignity.

Over the years, Dr Akinoshun’s extraordinary contributions to the wider community and later to the nursing and midwifery community have earned him numerous awards and recognitions. Notable among these are the “Our Heroes Community Champion Award” from the South London Press, and the Metropolitan Police Award presented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Commander John Grieve, for his efforts in combating workplace discrimination. He is also the recipient of the Nigerian Centenary Awards UK (2014), the BEFFTA Special Award for outstanding societal contributions, and the EPRA Leadership and Entrepreneurial Award as Outstanding Charity Champion of the Year (2018), among many others.

Dr. Akinoshun was conferred a Doctor of Humanities for his selfless service. He has received various accolades for his community work, including being named Philanthropist and Life Changer of the Year (2015) by the Gracious Health Foundation.

While Dr. Akinoshun’s achievements are numerous, there are still many more awards and recognitions that reflect the breadth of his work and the countless lives he has touched through his advocacy.

Dr. Akinoshun’s academic and professional background includes a Master’s degree in Social Psychology from the University of Sofia, Bulgaria, and a qualification in Mental Health Nursing from King’s College, London. He worked for over 14 years in senior management roles across five NHS Foundation Trusts, culminating in his role as Clinical Services Manager. During his tenure in the NHS, Dr Akinoshun mentored and supported numerous nurses.

In 2006, he made history as the first and only Black African nurse to be elected by over 200,000 registered nurses in England to represent them at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). His dedication to improving the quality of care within the nursing profession, particularly in advocating for safer and more equitable practices, has left a lasting impact.

Currently, as the CEO of Employment Rights Representation and Advisory Services (ERRAS), Dr Akinoshun continues to represent nurses, midwives and nursing associates at NMC hearings across the UK, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights protected. His work through the Dr. Abbey Akinoshun Foundation (DAAF) also extends his passion for helping the less privileged, making him not only a defender of rights but a philanthropist dedicated to uplifting others.

His life’s work is a testament to his commitment to justice, equality, and excellence. Through his experience, determination, and deep understanding of employment and regulatory law, he has changed countless lives and is a powerful voice for those who need it most.
